The Department of Anatomy graduate studies program offers research and training opportunities in several contemporary areas of interest, including:
  • systems and cellular neurobiology
  • cell biology
  • developmental biology
  • cardiovascular studies

Program of StudyThe Department of Anatomy offers programs of study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The program is intended to provide a broad background in biomedical science, to provide expertise in a selected area of research, and to develop the skills and insights necessary to become an effective teacher and independent investigator. After completing a core curriculum of basic science courses, each student pursues an individually tailored program of advanced study and directed research training in an area of his or her particular interest. Teaching in departmental courses and presentation of research findings at national meetings are encouraged and supported.

Faculty members conduct active research programs in a variety of areas including sensory and motor systems neurobiology and the role of cells and extracellular matrix in cell, developmental, and cardiovascular biology. Anatomy faculty research programs are supported by both public and private national funding agencies. The department has excellent research facilities for light and electron microscopy, tissue culture, intracellular and extracellular electrophysiology, behavior testing, and biochemical analysis. The department is part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, which offers graduate degree programs in the basic medical sciences, as well as professional training in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and the health related professions.

    Financial Aid
Financial aid, including University scholarships and funds from other sources, is available to support qualified students. Information is available from the Director of the Graduate Program in Anatomy.

    Application for Admission
Admission to graduate study requires a baccalaureate degree (with at least a B average) from an accredited institution. Applications are evaluated on the basis of letters of recommendation, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, grades, and other qualifications. Applications are accepted throughout the year, but applications received by January 31 will receive priority consideration for admission to the Fall Quarter.
